The position requires a Caterer to provide kosher, vegetarian/dairy catering services with Jewish dietary laws and community standards. The Caterer will be responsible for preparing meals primarily for Shabbat Kiddush lunches and other synagogue events as needed.



1. Food Preparation and Service:

  • Prepare and serve kosher, vegetarian/dairy meals for Shabbat Kiddush and other synagogue events.
  •  Expect to prepare a buffet style kiddush for 60 – 220 attendees on Shabbat.
  • On Shabbat the meal should include 1 protein, 2 sides, dessert (1 sweet and fruit in season), challah, tea and coffee.
  • Prepare healthy snacks for 10 – 15 children for Saturday morning programs.
  • Includes food shopping, preparation, service, and cleanup.
  • Ensure all food is kosher, vegetarian/dairy, and safe for consumption. No meat, poultry, or non-kosher food is permitted in the shul.
  • Develop menus featuring seasonal and locally sourced ingredients when in season
  •  Coordinate with event organizers to tailor menus to specific events or dietary requirements.

2. Client and Synagogue Interfacing:

  • For regular Kiddush events, liaise directly with the synagogue’s staff.
  • For sponsored events, collaborate with the sponsoring family to determine menu preferences and additional offerings beyond the base Kiddush provided by the synagogue. Negotiate pricing and menu details directly with the family based on predetermined options to ensure their satisfaction while maintaining adherence to kosher and sustainability standards.

3. Annual Price and Cost Management:

  • Negotiate annually a pay-per-person plan with administration for a minimum of 60 people per shabbat with other meals to be negotiated per occasion.
  • Establish prices annually to be charged for Kiddush catering services when sponsored by someone other than the synagogue, ensuring transparency and adherence throughout the year.

4. Effective Communication and Administrative Documentation and Processes

  • Ensure all communications are clear, concise and effectively relay necessary information to the synagogue staff and event sponsors.
  • Respond promptly to inquiries and requests, ensuring timely and clear communication.
  • Develop and maintain well-organized administrative documentation, including detailed written proposals and event contracts.
  • Implement and use a proper invoicing system to ensure timely CD and accurate billing.

5. Kitchen Management, Compliance and Safety:

  • Adhere to all applicable health, safety, and kosher regulations.
  • Comply with employment laws and worker’s compensation requirements for contract employees.
  • Maintain a clean and organized kitchen environment.
  • Manage inventory, food orders, and kitchen supplies effectively.
  • Proven experience in kosher catering, preferably in a community setting.
  • Strong understanding of kosher dietary laws and practices.
  • Knowledge of sustainable food practices and commitment to implementing them.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with clients and stakeholders.
  • Organizational skills to manage multiple events and deadlines effectively.
Additional Comments:


  • Work location at the First Narayever Congregation facility
  • Catering services for Kiddush on Shabbat including preparation on preceding days as required.
  • Additional services as needed for other events and occasions
