The Village Shul (“TVS”) is an outreach organization focused on both local and global outreach. TVS runs events, programs, and classes for all demographics including families, young couples, and advanced members.  Housing a traditional synagogue located in the Forest Hill area of Toronto, TVS is a rapidly growing and thriving community of more than 270 families.


TVS is partners with Aish Toronto and an affiliated branch with Aish HaTorah International which is a world leader in creative Jewish educational programs, life cycle events, and year-round holiday celebrations. Our mission is to create a community where everyone can experience Jewish living to enhance personal growth and connection.


TVS has an exceptional opportunity for a passionate, proficient, organized, and dedicated individual with strong organizational and creative skills with an understanding of community-building to oversee and lead the planning of all events and programs required to achieve the goals of the organization.



As an event and marketing coordinator, your responsibilities would encompass a wide range of tasks related to organizing and executing various types of events. Reporting to the Executive Director and working collaboratively with Spiritual Leaders, Senior Staff and Volunteers, the Event Planner is responsible for the overall planning, implementation, and marketing of everything related to events and programs happening at TVS. This includes coordination of logistical aspects such as scheduling, catering, and tech support of daily programs, lifecycle events, special events, and holiday celebrations while ensuring the community and members are made aware of all that is being offered.

As an event planner, you play a significant role in helping TVS and families mark important milestones and navigate significant life transitions with grace and dignity. Attention to detail, sensitivity, and strong organizational skills are crucial.


Responsibilities & Duties

  1. Daily Program and Ongoing Program Execution Needs:
    • Ensure implementation and organization of daily event programs.
    • Coordinate logistical aspects such as room selection, scheduling, catering, and audiovisual requirements.
    • Ensure smooth execution of ongoing programs, making necessary adjustments as needed.
    • Supervise event staff and volunteers to ensure tasks are completed effectively and efficiently.
  1. Life Cycle Events:
    • Plan and execute life cycle events in coordination with families, TVS staff, and outside providers such as caterers.
    • Work closely with clients to understand their preferences and vision for the event.
    • Determine if an outside event planner should be hired to support the event if the client’s requests are above and beyond the scope of the Shul’s scope and offerings.
    • Support/Coordinate all aspects of the event, including décor, entertainment, and catering.
    • Manage budgets and timelines to ensure events are delivered within scope and on schedule.
  2. Special Events:
    • Organize special events such as men’s & women’s guest speaker dinners and fundraisers.
    • Collaborate with TVS spiritual leaders and staff to conceptualize themes and design elements for special events.
    • Source vendors and negotiate contracts for services and products required for the event.
    • Oversee event setup, coordination, and teardown to ensure everything runs smoothly.
  3. High Holidays and Other Holidays:
    • Plan and coordinate events for high holidays and other cultural or religious celebrations.
    • Respect cultural sensitivities and traditions while designing event programs.
    • Coordinate with religious or community leaders, if applicable, to ensure the event aligns with religious customs.
  4. Marketing and Communications:
    • Manage The Village Shul website
    • Weekly Shabbat schedule
    • Events and announcements
    • Generate and print the weekly Shabbat Bulletin
    • Create and edit posters, flyers, brochures
    • Manage lobby bulletin board, tables, and flyer stands

In addition to these specific duties, effective communication, time management, and problem-solving skills are essential for success in this role. Event planners must also stay up to date with industry trends and best practices to deliver memorable and impactful events.

  • 1-5 years of professional experience
  • General understanding of the Canadian Jewish community a plus
  • Able to work independently and “manage up” effectively

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Exceptionally organized and detail-oriented; able to manage multiple complex tasks
  • Proven ability to thrive in a dynamic, high-energy environment and under tight deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including a professional, customer-service-oriented demeanor
  • Track record of demonstrating sound judgment by making appropriate decisions and knowing when to take initiative in identifying problems and devising solutions.
Additional Comments:

  • Salary and Benefits: Salary range
$45,000 - $60,000 commensurate with experience. Competitive benefits package.
