Makom seeks experienced, creative and energetic teachers for Makom Afterschool for September 2024 – June 2025.


Openings Available:

Monday & Wednesday

3:00-6:00PM (Seaton Village)


Tuesday & Thursday

3:00-6:00PM (Wychwood)

3:00-6:00PM (Kensington Market)


Duration: September 2024 – June 2025

Start Date: September 9, 2024


Location: Downtown Toronto, ON

Salary: $35/hour for teaching time

Additional opportunities for providing transportation from nearby schools before 3:30PM


Organization Overview

Makom Afterschool provides high-quality, pluralistic Jewish and Hebrew-language education in three neighbourhood public schools to students in Junior Kindergarten through Grade 5. Children from diverse Jewish families living in downtown Toronto find their place in our warm and welcoming community. Classes run on Mondays/Wednesdays and Tuesdays/Thursdays in three public schools around Toronto.



  • Teach classes twice (or four times) per week to children in JK/SK, grades 1-2, or grades 3-5
  • Prepare and submit lesson plans for each class using provided curriculum resources
  • Supervise break and snack time
  • Pick up students from their public-school classrooms at the Afterschool site or at nearby schools
  • Create and maintain a positive, welcoming and inclusive classroom community
  • Teach Hebrew literacy and conversational skills using play-based and experiential learning modalities
  • Teach Jewish values, culture and traditions through a pluralistic and inclusive lens
  • Attend monthly staff meetings (paid) to co-plan learning opportunities and engage in professional development
  • Participate in Makom Afterschool special events (paid) (e.g. End of Year Picnic)
  • Write mid-year progress and end of year report cards to communicate student learning strengths and areas for growth
  • Communicate regularly with parents regarding student progress and classroom learning including holding parent-teacher conferences (paid)
  • Report to the Director of Education in a timely and regular manner


  • Hebrew and English fluency
  • Expertise in at least one of the following: Early Childhood Education, teaching Hebrew as a second language, experiential or informal Jewish Education, differentiated instruction and/or classroom management
  • Experience with classroom teaching, lesson planning and pedagogy
  • Background in Jewish studies and traditions (e.g. Jewish holidays, religious and cultural practices, etc.)
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Commitment to children’s social and emotional development
  • Desire to grow and learn professionally
  • Passion for working and building relationships with children
  • Reliable and responsible

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with parent communication
  • Experience with experiential education modalities
  • Familiarity with child development to inform instruction
  • Experience teaching in multi-age classrooms
  • Experience with teaching a second language in an immersive environment

All Makom Afterschool staff are required to take CPR/Emergency First Aid training and pass a police Vulnerable Sector check, both of which will be paid for by Makom.
