Position Summary: 

Netivot HaTorah is looking for an LTO full-time School Counselor to join its Mental Health Department beginning August 2020. The School Counselor would be working in the classroom environment to address the academic, social and emotional needs of students. The primary focus of this role is to assist children to develop their self-esteem and social skills, to learn to build meaningful relationships and to provide behavioural support. The School Counselor will work primarily with our younger students (ages 2.5 – 8).

Job Duties (include but not limited to): 

  • Providing both classroom and individual student support (through development of growth plans and behavioural and safety plans and various other strategies and tools).
  • Short term and solution focused individual counselling as necessary
  • Consultation to classroom teachers and providing in class interventions and crisis intervention as needed
  • Collaborating with parents and liaising with outside professionals
  • Implementing and overseeing social-emotional learning curriculums (ex. Zones of Regulation, Social Thinking Program)
  • Implementing and overseeing school-wide social-emotional learning programming (ex. Mental Health Awareness Week, Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week)
  • Acting as a resource person for staff, students and parents
  • Developing and implementing supportive groups for students based on cohort specific needs
  • Working closely with team of classroom teachers, special education teachers and administrators

Qualifications and Abilities: 

  • Social Work Degree / Child and Youth Worker Diploma /  equivalent combination of education and experience with a Bachelors of Arts degree
  • Minimum 5 years clinical experience preferred
  • Experience practicing social work in and educational setting with students (K-through 8)
  • Strong knowledge of child development coupled with experience working with students with behaviours consistent with a diagnosis of ADHD, anxiety and ODD
  • Individual and group counselling experience that addressed issues of family conflict, ADD, anxiety, bullying, depression
  • Knowledge of community resources both in Toronto and York Region
  • Ability to respond effectively to crises and work collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary team
  • Awareness of all current legislation and policy regarding children’s mental health
