Organization Overview

Makom Afterschool provides high-quality, pluralistic Jewish and Hebrew-language education in three neighbourhood public schools to students in Junior Kindergarten through Grade 5. Children from the diversity of downtown Jewish families find their place in our warm and welcoming community. Classes run on Mondays/Wednesdays and Tuesdays/Thursdays in three public schools around Toronto.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Pick-up students from their local schools and/or classrooms and ensure they are checked-in and out according to Makom Afterschool policy (in partnership with classroom teacher)
  • Support and maintain a warm, positive, welcoming and inclusive community (in partnership with classroom teacher)
  • Ensure the safety of students in accordance with Makom Afterschool policy (in partnership with classroom teacher)
  • Support the classroom teacher’s ability to teach:
    • Work in partnership with teachers by discussing in advance of class how you can best support them and by taking direction from them in the moments when they need additional support
    • Help with classroom management, ensuring the class is participating and following instructions
    • Be an extra set of hands in setting up and cleaning up classroom and activities
  • Support and maintain a Hebrew-language environment through Hebrew immersion and conversation (in partnership with the classroom teacher)
  • Communicate with parents as needed, particularly about attendance, keeping Director of Ed included/aware of all communications (in partnership with the Core Teacher)
  • Assist students in keeping track of their belongings to prevent loss
  • Take pictures/video of the learning happening in class and send them to Director of Education (2-5 per class)
  • Submit all administrative documentation on time as requested (timesheets, reimbursement forms, etc.)
  • Fill out and submit incident reports as needed (in a timely fashion, in partnership with classroom teacher)
  • Attend monthly staff meetings and Makom special events (paid)
  • Maintain regular and timely communications with Director of Education and Makom administration
Qualificatons:
  • Hebrew proficiency; fluency preferred
  • Background in Jewish studies and tradition
  • Experience with classroom teaching, camp counselling or youth work
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Commitment to children’s social and emotional development
  • Desire to grow and learn professionally
  • Passion for working with children
  • Reliability and responsibility

All Makom Afterschool staff are required to take CPR training and pass a police Vulnerable Sector check, both of which will be paid for by Makom.
